Loft Insulation Replacement in Wigton

The Brief

A rural property on the outskirts of Wigton had loft insulation dating back to the original build. Decades of settlement had compressed the material to around 80mm, well below the current 270mm target, and there were clear signs of small-rodent activity along the eaves. The owners wanted the loft stripped, cleaned, and brought up to current regulation depth in a single visit.

What We Did

The work included:

• Full site survey and written quote: Free survey on a separate visit, confirmed rodent contamination, agreed a fixed price for full removal and 270mm replacement.
• Dust-controlled removal: Ran dust sheets from the loft hatch down the stairs to the front door. Bagged the old material inside the loft in heavy-duty rubble sacks, sealed each bag before bringing it down.
• Clean-down and vacuum extraction: Once the bulk material was out, vacuumed joists and ceiling plaster to lift any remaining fine debris and rodent contamination.
• Eaves check and ventilation: Verified the eaves ventilation path was clear, re-positioned the one existing baffle, and made sure the new insulation wouldn't block airflow.
• Fresh mineral wool to 270mm: Laid the first layer between joists, second layer cross-laid at 90 degrees on top to close joist-edge cold bridges. Clearance maintained around the single downlighter and hatch.
• Waste removal: All old insulation and packaging taken to a licensed facility the same day. No skip, no follow-up collection.

The Result

A clean, fully insulated loft hitting the current Part L recommendation for loft insulation depth. The owners reported noticeably quicker warm-up times on the first cold evening and a clear difference in the upstairs bedrooms overnight. Written workmanship guarantee and a copy of the material specification left with the homeowners for their records.

Job duration: One day on site, arriving at 08:30 and finishing by 16:00, including full clean-down.
